Legislation

In the autumn of 2025, an amendment to Decree No. 251/2023 of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic on fuel quality came into force, transposing the revision of the EU Fuel Quality Directive (FQD). The amendment abolished the possibility of selling diesel with a renewable diesel (FAME) content higher than 10%.

What does this legislative change mean for biofuels in practice?

Primarily, it means a ban on the sale of B20 and B30 fuels, i.e., diesel with twenty and thirty percent bio-content.

The amendment did not affect the availability of 100% biodiesel B100, which does not fall under the definition of diesel fuel according to the Fuel Quality Directive and is therefore still eligible to be sold on the Slovak market.
